Take a dip into water safety at Coogee beach

Member for Coogee Bruce Notley-Smith today invited the community to Coogee Beach on Saturday, 25 February, for a bumper family water safety day.

The Water Safety Community Education and Engagement Day is a collaborative event designed to raise public awareness of the importance of water safety and, in particular, drowning prevention.

"More than 30 lives have been lost in NSW since 1 December across NSW as a result of drowning," Mr Notley-Smith said.

"Tragically, many of those were preventable deaths. Each of us can take steps to help prevent such loss of life and this event will help draw attention to the need to check the conditions, keep an eye on others, and to wear a lifejacket."

Mr Notley-Smith said the day would focus on community education and engagement on water safety to support the NSW Government’s new mandatory lifejacket trial in the Randwick Local Government Area (LGA) to help reduce rock fishing fatalities.

"Ten lives have been lost to rock fishing related activities between 2015-16 and the trial requirement to wear a lifejacket while fishing in the Randwick LGA is part of the Government’s program to address the risk associated with this activity."

The Water Safety Community Education and Engagement Day, running 10am to 3pm, will include the Old4New lifejacket promotional van, information marquees and trailers, and safety craft including Jet Skis.

Partners in the event include; NSW Department of Primary Industries (Fisheries NSW), Randwick Council, NSW Police - Marine Area Command, NSW Department of Justice, Surf Life Saving NSW, Transport for NSW, Recreational Fishing Alliance NSW, Marine Rescue NSW and a number of culturally and linguistically diverse organisations.

Discounted life jackets through the 'Old4New Lifejacket Upgrade' program will be available to the community on the day.
